I need to vent about something: There is a person at work who talks about their personal life very loudly. Let's call that person "Pat". Everyone in a 100 foot radius can hear Pat and knows everything about Pat's personal life. At first it was entertaining, but now it is a broken record about how a person of romantic interest who was discovered at a bar hasn't called back after they hooked up. Also there are many stories about how this person and that person are wrong or stupid about something because they think they are better than Pat. Day in and day out. Blah, blah, blah. I like my job and my work environment except for this one thing. It isn't in my job description to listen to this blather all day long. I know, I know - "wear earphones". I prefer not to shut myself off from my work environment. I shouldn't have to.

Perhaps a conversation with a supervisor would help?

Mine knows about it. There isn't a rule at work that prohibits people from being tacky.

Hmm. I have a loud neighbor but the personal episodes are infrequent. Sometimes I cannot have s phone conversation due to background noise. I would think that your supervisor should let that person's supervisor know and it needs to be brought up at review time. There are rules or at least expectations about not being disruptive and about being appropriate. I was chastised for my work-stress induced "outbursts" which apparently annoyed someone (I did lose my temper the 100th time a computer crashed and when someone rebooted one I had a note on that it was running my cases) . So I will be upset if your loud talker is not addressed.

You could make up stuff that the person is saying and tell the supervisor you are worried for the loud talker's sanity. Or how about making up stuff for your own loud conversations that is more outlandish... then she will stop to listen to you for a while. Or how about leaning over and saying, "Are you talking about (use a name you just heard her say)? The same thing happened to me and blah blah blah" that interrupts her phone conversation. I was near a coworkers that talked constantly, but she was wearing her bluetooth so it only looked like she was a bag lady talking to imaginary people. She actually burned out 2 of the bluetooth headsets (I didn't know you could burn them out).
