Not dorky! Smart!

Barack Obama gets harangued by bloggers for wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle. This is not a political endorsement from me for Obama. However, wearing a helmet ensures that he WILL get to run for President of the United States. When I was in Florida last week, I was amazed at how many people were NOT wearing helmets, especially those who were out riding on Highway 98, which has a speed limit which varies between 45 and 65 mph. Besides, if you are riding your bike at 5 mph and crash and hit your head, you could be either (a) severely mentally disabled or (b) dead. I like my odds better when wearing a helmet.

Well, it's just that some people wear headgear better than others. Mike Dukakis had every reason to wear a tanker helmet when he was riding around in that tank, but he still looked goofy.

Obama, well, he did look a little Urkel-esque with that helmet and his choice of riding duds, but I won't fault him for it. One of my cousins died a few years ago from a head injury sustained while bike riding with his daughter. He was an old fat guy like me and probably didn't think he'd look cool in a bike helmet or that since he was just riding around the neighborhood it wouldn't matter that he didn't have a helmet on. But obviously it only takes one hit in the wrong place on your noggin to make you wish you'd not been so lackadaisical.

It's sorta like voting for an inexperienced, naive Socialist and hoping for the best. ;)
