Converted?

I never thought I'd say this, but my next laptop purchase will probably be a Mac. I've been a PC holdout because I needed some Windows-based software like MS Office and other IT-related apps when I was working in the IT world. I no longer need to use those apps and I can get Microsoft Office for the mac. My current laptop is a Dell. I bought a 3 year warranty and used the heck out of it. It expires in two weeks and my hard drive went bad last week. I installed a new one gratis since I had the warranty. I figure this hard drive could last another couple of years and by then I'll be ready to purchase a new laptop. Like most people I am sick of (a) viruses and trojans (b) my computer has 'new updates' every three minutes and wants to restart itself all the time (c) it takes 5-10 minutes for my Windows desktop to load up once I've powered the computer on. I just want everything to be easy and most of all, I am sick of some random process locking up my computer while I am trying to use it. Also, firewall software that asks me every 2 seconds if an application is okay to run when I've already told it ten times that the application is okay to run. So if it takes me ten minutes to check email, nine of those minutes were wasted thanks to Windows. I'm ready to jump off this train.

Out of curiosity, are you using XP or Vista? I gotta admit I have considered a Mac myself, although I am not (hopefully) going to be in the market for a couple of years.

I use XP. I refuse to convert to Vista.

Megabeth... come over to the Dark Side, you know you will be assimilated, resistance to Vista is futile.

Used Macs years ago, while high quality and useful, they continue to battle the lack of software problems.

I am sure you tried various anti-virus and spamware sweepers. Is it possible your computer is a zombie of some sort or filled with malware? Time to re-image from the beginning?

I would rather convert to a Mac than upgrade to Vista.

I just got a new hard drive so I started from scratch. My computer is still slow.

Outlaw, what lack of software problem? I'm not a gamer (and I *readily* concede that the Mac is behind in games but since the advent of the Xbox Wii & PS3 what dedicated gamer wants a PC for games anyway?) and everything I need is on a Mac. Even to the point the built-in iLife apps do things for me I never thought I could do.

I'm sure you can set me up with what the Mac's lacking (not sarcasm - serious), but I haven't felt any limitations in several years.
And MegaB - maybe you could list some apps you consider essential so that should you switch, you'd be sure to know that what you need is covered.
I'm just sayin'.
