the excess

Something amazing happened over the past six months or so. This summer, my supervisor was promoted, and to take his place, a new supervisor was hired from another company.

She bribed us with candy. Tons and tons of candy of all types; she made sure that every preference and every taste bud was pleased. Plenty of hard, chewy, soft, chocolatety, tangy, sour, sweet, fruity, nougaty, neon-colored, sugar-coated goodness. My dentist would physically attack her if she found out what has been going on.

I love candy more than most anything in the world, but having an ample supply of candy around for most of my waking hours has cured me of the excitement I once felt when presented with an opportunity to eat candy. I still have a sweet tooth (always will) and I still eat candy every now and then. BUT NOW I WALK BY THE CANDY DISH AND KEEP GOING. It is an amazing feat that I never thought would be accomplished. If my candy-crazy self comes back again, I'm going to work in a candy store. Then I'll probably start hating it.

Just reading all those types of candy makes me think I need to get a dental checkup. Was she trying to bribe all of you to like her, or establishing a transactional relationship where you got candy for doing some part of your normal work, or just wanted everyone to fatten up like her (assuming she is large sized), or something else? Maybe wants to have people stop by and talk to her for human contact she craves but can't get otherwise? Something a bit askew here business leadership or psychologically, me thinks.

Wouldn't you like someone who gave you lots and lots of candy? At work we need as many goodies as possible to keep us happy. That's why every meeting offers snacks, pastries, lunch, drinks, etc. Otherwise nobody would show up.

Well, at my work they keep potato chips, candy, suckers, peanuts, cashews, and on and on. I guess that's ok, but after the second day there when the team leader kept his mouth stuffed with chips and nuts during the entire 2 hour meeting he was leading - and talked the entire time - I was cured.

I don't mean ban the stuff, but some manners would be welcome. I show up for the pay (but would take a pay cut to do something else), not the candy. And the time off.
