Still on vacation, sort of

I'm enjoying the lazy thing so much that I am still being lazy, three days after returning from the beach. My vacation week consisted of six glorious days of doing nothing while sitting on the beach, basking in the sun. All six days had perfect weather. Crowds were minimal because we slipped in and out of there right before the holiday weekend.

I think the vacation convinced me that I should do less in general. I should spend more time sleeping late, relaxing, hanging out, reading, watching movies, etcetera. Now I'm wondering how to simplify my life without disappointing some people who I have made commitments to help out in various ventures. It's easy to reduce the amount of exercise and races I commit to, but when other people are involved, backing out is more complicated. I also decided to hire a maid to clean my house. I feel much happier when I'm not hurried and frazzled all the time.

I'm on a similar sort of journey. I think of it as simplifying life rather than doing less. What I value most is clarity, and I feel compelled now to remove as much clutter as possible. Clutter in this case means diversions or distractions. I want to focus on three things: reading, writing, and loving (not necessarily in this order). It sounds so easy. But it seems that each day there are new challenges. Does the world abhor simplicity the way nature abhors a vacuum? I'm thinking it does. Let me know what you find.

Sometimes you have to go slow, to go fast. No reason not to throttle back and do less. Except commenting in here, of course?

Ive been doing more research on cutting back and simplifying. I've got a link to 43 Folders in my de.licio.us page under Where to find Dre. My be more than what you're looking to do, but it's been helpful so far.

Andre: I had saved the link to 43 Folders a few months ago, but sadly I was too busy to take a few minutes to look at it. Oh, the irony. I will revisit.

Chris: Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to return to the days when people had to take Sundays off completely in observance of God. There is something good to be said about taking one day a week for real, genuine rest.
